Language Arts

Throughout the school, a rich vocabulary is encouraged. In the primary grades, students are introduced to sight words and taught how to use a word wall. Teachers in Kindergarten through fifth grade use the Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt Journeys series to teach reading while integrating phonics, spelling patterns, and vocabulary strategies.
In grades six through eight, we use the Saddlier-Oxford Vocabulary Workshop workbook that teaches students to define, spell, use, and differentiate between synonyms and antonyms. We also use the Saddlier-Oxford Grammar for Writing workbook to practice the application of grammar, usage, and mechanics within the students' own writing. We believe in the importance of using a comprehensive and balanced writing and grammar program to build skills in our students beyond the classroom.
A Houghton-Mifflin textbook is used to extend and enhance the English language skills in grades three through five.
